What is that mystery powder? The powder is a polymer or a long chain molecule that is highly absorbant. When water is added to the powder, the water molecules travel into the small spaces between the polymer's molecules, causing the individual granuals to grow. The volume of the powder can increase 30-60 times its origional size. At some point, all of the spaces are filled with water and the grains stop growing. These polymers are commonly found in diapers.
